Research

  • In 2018-2019 Stephanie wrote a doctoral dissertation on the impact that animal assisted therapy played on the moods’ of hospitalized patients. By using a pre-test post-test design, the participants were surveyed before and after a 7-10 minute visit with the therapy dog. After surveying 62 inpatient adults, 26 agreed to take part in this research. She found all 26 patients who participated had improvement in their moods after their visit. Patients had decreased anxiety and felt it was a positive distraction from their ailments. By conducting this research she was able to argue that improvement in patients’ mood and mental health would improve their outcomes. As a result, she was able to expand a facility’s Animal Assisted Therapy Program to different patient populations and increase the number of days the therapy dogs visited patients.
