What are the leading digestive issues for women?
At Allied Digestive Health, we recognize the unique challenges women face when it comes to digestive health. Our team of dedicated female gastroenterologists is not only advancing the field but also addressing these specific needs with compassion and expertise.
Women experience certain gastrointestinal conditions at higher rates or with distinct symptoms due to hormonal changes, reproductive health, and other gender-specific factors. Below are some of the most common digestive health issues affecting women and how they impact overall well-being.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Women are more likely than men to suffer from IBS, particularly IBS with constipation (IBS-C) and IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D). Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle often worsen IBS symptoms in women.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis affect men and women, but women face unique challenges during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, which can influence symptom severity and treatment options.
Functional Dyspepsia: This condition, characterized by chronic indigestion and discomfort in the upper abdomen, tends to affect women more frequently than men and is often associated with psychological stress and hormonal changes.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD is common in both men and women, but women, especially during pregnancy, are more susceptible due to the increased pressure on the abdomen and hormonal shifts.
Celiac Disease: Women are diagnosed with celiac disease more often than men. This autoimmune disorder affects the small intestine and can cause gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, bloating, and malabsorption of nutrients, which may lead to other health issues like osteoporosis and anemia, especially in women.
